Judo Code
The Judo Code is a core set of moral principles set out as a sort of mission statement by Jigoro Kano. It is the intention that students, through study and practice; learn more than just the physical aspects, and that judo is a powerfull character building experience.
While the judo code is not often discussed in its literary form, the judo code is at the core of everything that we do in judo.
The eight core principles of the Judo Code are:
- Courtesy: Being polite and respectful to others.
- Courage: Facing difficulties with bravery and resilience.
- Honesty: Being sincere in thoughts and actions, both in and out of the dojo.
- Honor: Doing what is right and standing by one's principles, even when facing challenges.
- Modesty: Avoiding vanity and boastfulness, being humble in success and failure.
- Respect: Appreciating others and oneself, fostering mutual respect within the dojo and beyond.
- Self-Control: Maintaining emotional composure, especially in challenging situations.
- Friendship: Being a good companion and friend, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie.
